The Ministry of Defence has assured military veterans that their welfare, remuneration and pension concerns are receiving urgent attention from the Federal Government.
The assurance was given by the Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, during a courtesy visit by representatives of military veterans to the Ministry in Abuja on Wednesday.
This is contained in a statement by Mr Henshaw Ogubike, Director, Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Defence, on Wednesday in Abuja.
Musa, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Richard Pheelangwah, acknowledged the sacrifices and distinguished service of military veterans, describing their welfare as a government priority.
He said concerns over wage and pension adjustments were being addressed through consultations with relevant military, pension and financial authorities.
The minister said the engagements were aimed at achieving a fair, sustainable and implementable resolution that would ensure veterans were not unfairly disadvantaged.
He appealed to the veterans to remain calm and pursue constructive engagement, stressing that sustained dialogue remained the most effective means of resolving outstanding concerns.
Musa said any adjustment to veterans’ entitlements must be properly computed, adequately funded and implemented in line with existing approvals, regulations and due process.
He explained that adherence to due process was necessary to ensure sustainability and prevent unintended disparities in the implementation of revised entitlements.
The minister assured the veterans that the Ministry would sustain engagement with their representatives and provide updates as progress was made on the issues raised.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s appreciation of the patriotism, courage and sacrifices of military veterans.
Musa said government remained committed to ensuring that their service to the nation was recognised not only in words, but through sustained attention to their welfare and legitimate entitlements. (DECAN)
